Sony A77: An Impression

Have been reading, with high anticipation, about Sony new top of the advanced amateur line DSLR, the Alpha A77’s EVF technology for a while and could not get a clear impression what it looks and feels like. So I went to Sony Style and tried it today.

IMPRESSIVE!

First of all, the view is much larger than mirror/prism based viewfinder of the same class of camera (APS-C). The size is comparable to that of full frame SLR; to me, this is just revolutionary and a technological breakthrough, indeed.

Most importantly, the resolution and sharpness are so good that I forgot I was looking at an EVF! But when I looked with scrutiny, okay, I found that, though very good, it is not as good as a good prism finder. Seem like one need to trade size for sharpness. Well, unlike a prism finder, EVF is able to show any information and parameters, but I could not care less about that.

Body construction is on par with competitors, namely Canon 7D and Nikon D7000. I am not sure about Olympus E-30 and Pentax K-5/7 however as I have never held one in hand. If a classic and all-metal SLR is 10 in robustness, this A77 could be around 8, really good.

The price tag for A77 here in Thailand is THB42,000 for the body and around THB62,000 with its F/2.8 kit lens. As I know that A77 will not give me any advantage in image quality over the gears I already own, so I would save this and better buy a new scanner for my medium format gears. Apart from the price, great job Sony. I am truly impressed!
